COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

Certified Maintenance Specialist (CMS)
Certification Course
The CMS course is open without any pre-requisites to anyone in the industry. This entry-level course is appropriate for new and seasonal service employees, as well as for all individuals with a pool-cleaning route. The course is only 2-1/2 days and focuses on basic water chemistry, circulation and filtration, water balancing, pool math, electrical safety, and routine maintenance. It also covers best practices for safety, customer service and professionalism. The CMS course offers full certification to those who pass the certification exam at the end of the course. (This course replaces the former Tech I Training course.)

Certified Service Technician (CST)
Certification Course
Although there are no pre-requisites to attend, the CST course is intended for individuals who have one to two years of pool/spa service experience.  The course is 5 days and covers all aspects of pool/spa equipment service, repair and replacement.  Students will learn how to recognize and troubleshoot problems, and will be expected to be able to solve common problems on the certification exam at the end of course. (This course replaces the former Tech II Training course.)

Certified Service Professional (CSP)
Certification Exam and Optional Prep Course
The CSP designation is the highest level of certification in the APSP Service Education and Certification Program.  This designation distinguishes a pool service professional as one of an elite group of pool industry professionals that have passed a rigorous objective exam and committed themselves to the highest standards of pool service and repair and professional ethics.  Applicants for the exam must have at least 5 years in the pool industry, at least 24 hours of continuing education credit over the previous 3 years, and own or purchase a copy of the APSP Service Tech Manual, 4th edition, upon which the exam is based.  The exam may be taken at an APSP-sponsored testing event at a national or regional education program or show, or arrangements can be made to test close to home at an approved testing site.  There is an optional five-hour exam prep course offered in advance of the group exam events.

NEW!
APSP Service Tech Manual, 4th Edition Package
This is the textbook for all of the Service Education and Certification programs.  The 500-page manual also comes with a CD that contains nine ANSI/APSP standards, the APSP Loss Control Manual, APSP Workmanship Guidelines, and Consumer Safety Brochures in PDF format. Tech School attendees receive a discount on the Manual with their Tech School registration. Purchased separately the price is $499, or $299 for APSP members.

Certified Building Professional (CBP)
The CBP designation is highly regarded and distinguishes a pool builder as one of an elite group of pool industry professionals that have passed a rigorous objective exam and committed themselves to the highest standards of pool building and professional ethics.  Applicants for the exam must have at least 5 years in the pool industry, at least 24 hours of continuing education credit over the previous 3 years, and own or purchase a copy of the APSP Builder’s Manual, 3rd edition, upon which the exam is based.  The exam may be taken at an APSP-sponsored testing event at a national or regional education program or show, or arrangements can be made to test close to home at an approved testing site.  There is an optional 5 hour exam prep course offered in advance of the group exam events.
